Michael R Gibson
Associate Professor, Communication Design
The University of North Texas
School of Visual Arts

Pursuing a career in graphic design is like pursuing a career in law,
medicine, social work or politics in that what you do shapes a huge part
of your identity from the moment you begin taking courses in a college
degree program until the moment you retire or die, whichever comes
first. Selling customizable IT software or repairing photocopiers don't
define and contextualize why you are who you are nearly as much as
living the life of someone who directly affects the daily lives of
others. What graphic designers do determines whether or not businesses
large and small succeed or fail, and the decisions we make inform people
from all walks of life about how to vote and who to vote for, what
possessions and activities signify admiration or contempt, which music
and clothing accessories are in style "right now," or simply how to
properly brown pine nuts. The somewhat-famous last words of Peter
Parker's (Spiderman's) beloved Uncle Ben apply to us perhaps even
more than they did to the crime-fighting web-slinger: "with great power
comes great responsibility."

This session is not being facilitated to help entry-level
graphic designers (and those who soon will be) "survive their first
agency job," or "put together more competitive portfolios," or "ask and
answer interview questions more effectively." There will be lots of
opportunities to get this kind of advice between now and the time they
enter the job market or advance within it for the first time. What
attendees of this session will gain is very straightforward, forthright
information about how to plan and maintain a career as a graphic
designer that lasts longer than the time it took for them to earn their
college degree. Strategies for balancing the day-to-day, real-life
demands of working in an agency or consultancy while simultaneously
maintaining meaningful personal relationships will be presented, along
with ways and means to successfully maintain your physical and mental
health and your personal finances while juggling client, vendor and
co-designer demands. Practical approaches for developing and maintaining
an identity for yourself that isn't completely defined by how many
design awards you win in a given year, or your ability to "simply make
stuff look cool," will also be covered during this learning experience.

Rebecca Kelly
Rebecca Davis-Kelly was a former graduate student at the University of North Texas and is currently an assistant professor of graphic design at Mississippi State University and partners in a small graphic design studio working on such as clients as Frito-Lay, Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Campbell’s, Hasbro Toys and Southwest Airlines.

Her research agenda involves advocating for the ethics and responsibilities of graphic designers, and is also concerned with the level of corporate involvement in our everyday lives. With all of those agendas combined, (and quoting one of her favorite professors) it is her mission to prove to the world that graphic designers can do more than sell toothpaste.

Meta Newhouse
How to land a dream job.

This breakout session will illuminate students on how to get face-to-face
interviews, how to prepare for an interview (once they have landed one), and
actual interview do's and don'ts.

Meta Newhouse is a principal at Newhouse Design and has over eighteen years of professional design experience. She graduated with honors from Vanderbilt University with a B.A. in Fine Arts. Currently working toward a MFA degree in Communication Design Education, Meta plans to eventually teach at the University level, full-time. If you can't find her in the classroom, she is probably out making film documentaries. The most current film she is working on is about the venerable graphic designer and AIGA Medalist George Tscherny.

She has also taught 11 semesters of the Senior Portfolio Class (both art direction and graphic design) at the University of North Texas. Through that experience, and her many years as a Creative Director, she believes she has seen roughly just over 1,200 student portfolios to date.
